With His Holiness (what he wanted us to tell you…)

Just waking from a nap on the monastery, one of the oldest and, we could say, most influential in India.

This in and of itself is surreal. I’m waking from a nap inside the same room, too, where hours ago Thupten Jinpa, the brilliant Monastic Scholar, who has been the Dalai Lama’s translator for the last 30+ years, held a class for us, monk desks and all (if you‘ve watched documentaries on His Holiness or have read any of his books, you’ve seen Jinpa or read or heard his words many, many times).

It’s important to note that on our first day, we were told explicitly that we were not here as tourists, but to learn. I can’t tell you how much I loved hearing that.

But before the amazing teachings from Jinpa, in another small room with the 35-40 of us invited to this week’s experience, in one of the other prayer halls/ buildings on the larger compound, I knelt a foot away from His Holiness, as he spoke to us for the first time.

He had walked slowly through the middle of the pathway we had created for him, about 20 of us on each side, that led directly to his big chair. After taking a photo with us, he addressed our group. (Jinpa later told us that this (below) is what His Holiness wanted us — and our friends and communities back home — to hear most):

• He mentioned how education systems around the world should include mental education, or in other words, helping children to learn about emotions, specifically how they work, so that destructive tendencies would lessen ~ “emotional hygiene“, he called it.

• We are social animals, he said, and so we naturally have the ability to be compassionate ~ we have it built in. That we need to use it over and again to let go of anger and fear.

• He addressed and emphasized how important community is and that we are all “one community”. He discuss this topic of oneness of humanity or of a common humanity a lot; that when we don’t have or feel it, we feel more fear and more loneliness.  It used to be that our family was our “village” or community, he said, but today it’s about (needs to be about) our global community. He wanted us to share this, specifically, because he felt this was another way to make positive change in the world.

• Early on, he discussed how Buddhism uses the mind / intellect and the “methods“ of compassion and meditation to achieve peace ~ use the methods, he said, (he mentioned this a few times). Compassion, meditation, compassion, meditation. Just as in Buddhist chanting or praying, it’s all about repetition, repetition — it does eventually create, not just a practice, but a better life and better actual living [loving] communities.

• Going from a “me” mindset to thinking about the greater good was discussed, too (see point about our one global community).

• Some of his exact last words before he walked out:

(emphasizing again…) “We must keep our mind on 7 billion people.”

There was not one dry eye in the room.

The day was so special, a treasure. And, there’s still so much more to say, but how?

Our Last of 2019 (GGP, photos)!

What peace, joy, happiness or comfort means to me ~ one’s heart, mind and home are full with presence (a present in and of itself), conversations and the people, oh the people, you love.

The last Greater Good Party of 2019 gives a huge loud roar of a thank you to Ali and Robert for the music that moved us all night, Christina for the artistry in words that shook us (“…let’s start a self-expression revolutionnnn”) and to Fritzi and Nish who shared their stories of fulfillment on this ‘we want to help humanity and express our multi-faceted selves’ creative path.

This GGP was our 13th in 2.5 years — the 9th in Los Angeles and fourth in 2019 with us traveling to co-produce an epic one in Austin (Amanda & Matt 😘) and throughout them all a few things continue to be true:

• When you create what you want to be part of, you’re usually speaking to something needed in society and the world…

• To create and grow the things that are meant for you and society/the world can feel effortless (not to be confused with little work).

• Build it and they will come. Yes, true, but only if your heart is genuinely in it and the world genuinely needs it (essentially point #1).

• People are searching for and come back for z energy — in anything, whether it’s an event, a business or a friendship. And that energy has to be — gets to be — consistent. If it is, your creation will live on (and on)…

• Connection — not looking at our phones, but instead, looking at each other = it’s invigorating, healing and (fill in the truth/feeling you’ve felt when you’ve deeply connected with someone HERE).

Both Josh and I are infinitely grateful to this project/experiment known as the GGP for all its brought to our lives and the collective community here in LA and beyond! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all our guests, old friends and new friends, who have shown up so fully as our storysharers, artists or attendees.

It’s been a great good year.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS from all of us at the GGP (let us know if you’d like to come to one of the parties in 2020)! 🎁

Day 1, Travel day to His Holiness the Dalai Lama

This is the same place I stood when I left for the vision quest. Josh took that photo.

But this morning on my way to India to hear/learn from His Holiness the Dalai Lama for five days [then meeting Josh and Nolan on that side of the world], yesterday’s post on that: bit.ly/2ssIX1v, Nolan took the shot.

I told him as we walked outside that all my typical Michelle Ghilotti Mandel civilian clothes have been left behind and that it feels good (it feels so good).

I have minimal anything in my bags. More food and potions for keeping immunity up, really, with very few changes of clothes, just like on my quest.

It feels heavenly, maybe even grown up to release hold of much stuff that in the end doesn’t truly pmake us more comfortable (it’s the illusion of…).

What IF the more we carry is connected to the number of burdens we carry or want to carry. Playing with this myself. I’m curious if this were true if we would all travel and live life with less of the material, but with more in all the other ways it counts for us (feels good) emotionally, spiritually and energetically.

I couldn’t take you all with me on those nine days in the wild in July (no wifi, no phones, not anything except my drinking water, a sleeping bag, a journal, couple jackets and the awe of nature to support), but, as much as I can and monastery wifi will allow (I hear there’s wifi in spots), I’ll love taking you with me on this journey…

LAX ~ Hong Kong

Hong Kong ~ Bangalore

Bangalore ~ bumpy four-wheeler to the tiny town where the monastery is…

Share with you on the other side!

Hubby & I Did THIS On The Full Moon 🌕 🔥

Two and a half years ago we committed to helping our community feel a community (we didn’t set out to grow one, but that’s exactly what’s happened and we’ve all been better for it). ⁣⁣

⁣⁣This has all happened without asking any guest, many of whom we’ve never met, to do or give anything except for their full selves (open heart, open mind) when they walk through those doors…⁣⁣

Tonight is our 13th Greater Good Party (our 10th in Los Angeles) and on THE LAST FULL MOON OF THIS DECADE closing out the past ten years. ⁣⁣ 🤩🌕🙆🏻‍♀️⁣⁣

Two artists will be playing Earth Wind and Fire (shout out to my mama), we’ll share in spoken word/poetry, as always, and two storytellers, also as always, and this time on the topic of committing to our core gifts/talents.⁣⁣

⁣⁣One question I’ll likely pose tonight ~ what if our “core gift” (may even call it a talent) is connected to that *feeling* you leave people with after they’ve had an experience with you? Experience being the operative word.⁣⁣

⁣⁣(🎁 Own the energy you bring to the room).⁣⁣

⁣⁣Here’s to closing out the year in community (and in silent disco love ⬇️) and to recognizing that the primary or genuine talents, gifts, abilities or passions we have, we’ve always had and it’s always high time to decide to use them…to use our optimistic and life-giving energy more fully…⁣⁣

Can’t wait to feel what the GGP has in store for us all in 2020!⁣⁣
