This is Nolan and me arriving to Carpe Diem Farm after a seven-hour trek in the Colombian Sierra Nevadas a couple years ago. It’s one of my favorite trips with him.
I remember what I asked him as we hiked.
I wanted to keep his mind busy with this and other things vs. on the difficulty of the hot adventure we were on (I eventually wrote this down so I would never forget)…
“Do you realize that EVERYTHING has a purpose?” I asked.
The conversation had been rich, so this came easily.
I continued — “The dirt, the splattered mangoes on the ground (our four-legged friend loved them), the wind, the trees, the heat, the humidity…?”
“Yeah, but what is the purpose of LIFE?” he responded.
He then answered his own question (I was clearly taking too long):
“The purpose of life is to KEEP life, to keep it going, to keep your life going and the lives of others going. Not to get too philosophical, but…”
I can’t remember what else was said, but I do know this is why we walk…why we quality time…why we nature…why we sweat and choose the harder things…why we keep talking, but, most importantly, listening…
