The Mushy Question The Greater Good Party Started With

The question I posed to him about a year and a half ago was a mushy one, so for those of you not into gooey love or public shares of affection, close your eyes:

“…how can we use the love and mutual respect felt between us for more?”

Josh Mandel and I had worked together in advertising early on, had created a baby eight years after that and had started a grief “he said, she said” blog after Dino died (eight years after creating the baby), but it had been a while since we had come together to do more with what we had between us.

There’s so much that can be done (TO be done!) with those that give you life.

Anyway, out of this question, the Greater Good Party was born. That’s the short of the long.

Tomorrow we fly to Austin to co-lead another GGP (our 9th), the new school, old fashioned house party that aims to help communities connect and deepen in relationship, while also moving people to take the purpose or legacy project that’s likely been on the back burner of their life and move it, finally, to the front burner.

For those of you who don’t know, the night is filled with song, poetry, speakers and meaningful conversation with some pretty optimistic people.

As we travel around, help others plan GGPs, and more deeply understand what it means to do great good, one thing we’ve come to find is that in each city, the GGP is helping to connect hosts with their larger community (something most of us didn’t even know we desired until we have it) — with new friends professionally and personally.

Amanda and Matt, our Austin co-hosts/leaders, are new to the city and have 80 people attending (amazing response for them…lots of new friends and/or deeper relationships being created).

Three days after returning from Austin, we host 50 people for a GGP, specifically, for the Transcendental Meditation organization here in LA.

It‘s been some of the busiest months building and keeping MGI and family life going, but when I think about what this is doing, I can’t help but welcome lots more of it (as I type that, a hummingbird is playing outside my window).

I’m grateful to bountiful self-care lately (and — can’t forget this love) for giving me the energy needed to keep pulling life off.

Austin, here we come!

The Fire I’m NOT Putting Out (Watch For This In Your Movement!!)

[The above screenshot was from an email from one of the organizers of the TM group; it sold out in a couple hours Tuesday morning]

Since we started the Greater Good Party (our next in Austin in a week and our first with an outside organization, the Transcendental Meditation org days after!), I have received more emails, texts, social media DMs and phone calls (to give insight, recos or support on various topics or projects) than ever before.

~> It’s sparked something that I thought useful to share for those looking to be of deeper service, grow/skyrocket or evolve a current business or step into what you might feel is a higher calling.

It’s a practical and fairly simple something, but in the last decade or so, I have seen fewer and fewer people stay on top of this. There are simply too/so many ways to connect that many of us are in overwhelm.

But when we decide to follow an idea, especially when we’ve been persistent and surrendered or said yes to each detail that feels like it wants to “go”, there comes a time when the kindling known as the days we kept showing up and up and up helps to grow a fire…

Fire is good (we have to remember that), but in order to keep our energy high (aka take care of ourselves), as well as be/stay on top of the excitement we’ve generated in others, we must be able to keep up with the demand, or in other words, have a system or people in place to help us respond to the community that we are growing.

Simply put, this means exercising leadership and come up with solutions to keep it all going/glowing/growing.

We all need a process or the right people to help us keep the quality communication going. Success or growth of any kind (physical, emotional or spiritual) is so much about this ~ communication or completing the conversation started.

In other words, once we start the conversation, we are responsible/ accountable for it…

Saying yes, thanks, saying no, thanks, saying thank you but maybe someone else is better suited, basically continuing to create community + relationships.

Sure, maybe you can’t respond to every social media comment or direct message and maybe some emails received aren’t relevant and there’s just too many of them, but the idea is to make the meaningful machine you’re building include a plan/process for more refined communication to those who have essentially helped you build what you prayed for / desired [and who now ultimately deserve, if not a response from, a response from someone or some part of your team!].

For many years now, I’ve been chatting with Josh about this phenomenon — organizations, personal brands, and businesses not able to keep up with the demand on the communication side of things (which I see as the gratitude side of things).

In other words, when we complete the circle of connection, we are giving gratitude for the fire found in the belly finally catching up outside of that belly, out in the world.

We get to be grateful for it!

It’s honestly taken up so much of our conversation time — just how many emails aren’t returned by people whom I know want to be or are big players in some way or another. (In short, if you can’t do it, shift the model, check in again to see if this is truly the dream you wanted to build or not and/or hire someone to do the community building for you).

On a similar note, I also see/hear people growing or evolving businesses or starting new side projects who are not enjoying how full their lives are ~ > ok, fair ~ (check out the difference between the busy life and the full life in my last post), but, the question for us tonight is, isn’t this what we longed for?

Wasn’t the dream you were going for, one filled to the brim with this growing group of tremendous people, experiences and conversations?

Isn’t this the impact you most wanted to make in your part of the world?

We want what we want, but then when we get it, we hum that we have it. It’s part human nature, but the other part is forgetting that we asked for a beautiful full life — just like the one we’re living RIGHT NOW.

It’s good to check ourselves often so that more goodness can continue to roll in! Because that’s exactly what it wants to do…roll…in.

This Isn’t Mainstream!

One thing I don’t talk about much is the #friendshipexperiment I have going on with these two…one of the best yet.

It’s not mainstream, but it is real.

I’ve shared that over the last year and a half or so, I’ve recommitted to getting on planes, trains and automobiles or to writing the letters or having the conversations that need to happen to go to the places, physical and emotional, where my loved ones, family and friends, live and where we both feel most ALIVE ~ inside new memories.

Goodbye, text messages.

See you, email.

Hello to seeing those we love (*going* to see those we love) in new ways and with newfound energy (this was one of the reasons we started the Greater Good Party — to get people out from behind technology, true connection ~> better life).

The Friendship Experiment has been an incredible journey ~ one that’s had powerful effects on all parts of my life, in LA and beyond…brand new and ridiculously meaningful friendships seemingly came out of nowhere, powerful ideas for continued community building that have had far-reaching consequences and direction for how to infuse everythinggggg, personally or professionally, with more meaning.

As I wrote this I was on a plane right now headed for new memories with another special someone on the original post-it note I told you about a while ago.

I’ve also shared before that one of my greatest friendship experiments to date has been with my son (my sun), as well as with my first friend and brother Willie ~ both of these “experiments” or deepening of relationship have been smoothing out my crinkles and wrinkles. 😉

Ever since our two beloveds passed, my brother and I have genuinely found each other in a new way. The whole truth and nothing but the truth about the friendship experiment?

Recommitment to people, our people, and all people/humanity is one’s joy (and more fulfillment, success, and effortlessness in all areas of life).

Where we can genuinely recommit and stay committed, we find life, purpose and the creative energy to make our words, plans and actions match up to who we actually are and are capable of.

A more full potential.
A more full life.

Another relationship or experiment that’s going strong is the connection, as alive as the two mentioned above, that I have going with my Mom and youngest baby bird, Dino.

I speak to them (all the time), I close my eyes in yoga and say hi, I thank them after yoga, they meet me in my meditations and in short dreams that tell the long and true story of never having lost or been disconnected from them, as well as come to share in strong and obvious messages from others.

We’re always plugged in. All of us — to whomever and whatever is important.

We simply need to acknowledge it (them) by creating new paths or avenues, you know, opening *space* for it or them to land…

And the mantra that’s helped keep and grow the new friendships with my beloved Mom and baby bird?

Day or month after month, “I’m listening, no matter how subtle, I’m listening, tell me, show me….”

Over and over again.

That’s what recommitment is. Doing the thing over and over again knowing that when you show up so do they…so do they!

Me & Don Johnson circa 1987!

This photo was taken on the same trip I wrote those exact words in a journal/album where I was keeping all my hopes and dreams.

With my curved, shy shoulders and nervous hands, you wouldn’t know it (my Oma/grandma had just *forced* me under police tape to take this picture with Don Johnson — embarrassing), but I had started doing talent/modeling work and was convinced I would be the next star on a show similar to Who’s the Boss (who I am kidding ON Who’s the Boss, taking over the show).

So cute.

Kids. They’re awesome. You don’t really have to tell them or remind them to dream or dream big, because more important even than being natural dreamers, they are natural believers! This is one of the most important things to remind them ~> that’s the first step to having it manifest in your life…to believe.

I love this 12-year-old girl with what I *believe* are clip-on earrings so much.
