How I Found My Purpose (you won’t be confused on yours anymore!)

My Mom and I, my Creative Heroine…

There will only be one day in my entire life when I can say that by morning I was living in Guatemala City, set on a path for one life (with all the joys and challenges it might bring) and by that afternoon living in the States (with all the joys and challenges it might bring).

I wouldn’t find out we were staying until later…

Change has been and will be the only constant, but not because it is thrust upon you, but because you choose and keep choosing to change, consciously asking for it to keep finding you, please keep finding me, because you know — you’ve been shown, time and time again — that it’s both training and immediate growth all in one, the duo that will continue introducing you to what’s great, what’s next and what’s most on purpose.

It’s a beautiful thing to own your story.

You can either do exactly that ~ own it, as in, YOU “run” IT, you’re in charge of it or you let it run you, allowing it to be the excuse why you’re stressed, why it’s hard, why you’re not creating the meaningful life you know you were meant for and/or why you don’t feel loved…

Your story can be that — a story you tell others from a place of yes, that’s where I came from, all sorts of awesome…I came from trial and tests so that I would always know how to be reborn, reinvent, find joy and help others do the same.

Your divine purpose and final chapter in your story here is not to come from trial and testing and forever more sing the tune of I am still IN trial and testing. No. You’re given experiences and opportunities in life so the rest of it, once you become aware, can be exactly the opposite.

See that. See that?

Insert what you’ve gone through, witnessed or told the story of HERE and stop for a moment to reflect on what, then, this means that you’re called to now DO after having already seen the ashes.

It’s you rising from here, from there and from those stories…

You were given these experiences so you could spend the rest of your life showing others what it’s like to live and be the spokesperson for the opposite.

If you’re confused as to what your purpose is, this is it.

Enjoy your business, enjoy your life!

Passport to Greatness (parents you’ll understand)

I always love finding the passport baby announcement I designed for Nolan in with our real passports.

The first page inside reads: Our Little Wish Let Loose on the World and three languages, Spanish, English and Dutch announce his birthday (7/18/05).

…that’s exactly what he is in our eyes and likely what all of us adults were/are in our parents eyes, too ~ their wishes let loose on the world.

About two or three years ago when Nolan was about nine and started becoming more independent, Josh and I were sitting on the couch watching a show after putting him down. Out of nowhere, I squealed (the kind that comes out unexpectedly when you’ve seen something shocking).

Josh: What…what’s wrong?!

Me: It just hit me. What if Nolan wants to move to Iceland or somewhere really far away when he grows up?!!

Josh: That IS what we’re teaching him…

Me: I know…I know…

A more full-bodied conversation continued. It’s best described by this — just like Kokology, one of our favorite books to spark family conversation, travel is a game of self-discovery, one that may excite your kids as much as it has excited you and, yes, likely and eventually, take them away and away.

Nolan told us twice over the last year that he’d like to go to Holland, his birth country, for school at some point. It genuinely made me happy to hear him say that. I’ve always spoken to him about my study abroad experiences at 16 and 20 and he’s obviously been aware of our moves to Holland and Mexico.

I’m ECSTATIC that he gets to know the world without us. It just hadn’t occurred to me until a few years ago that he might do it WITHOUT US (the wise one inside always knew that our expat living as a family and other adventures would inspire him, but that was cute when he was three and the reality was far out in the distance).

As I’ve realized over the last few years, little boys don’t stay little for long (he’s 12 in a couple weeks), so I’ll love up on his wings. I will. And I’ll continue to show him mine which are always expanding, too.

I love this little wish, our only child, so much that I miss him already. Parents, I know many of you feel me.

Off to Italy and Israel.

Wings! That’s the wish…always been the wish 🙂

Enjoy your business, enjoy your life!

DON’T Apologize (A Story for the Women)

A Story For The Women…

Michelita, I look pretty today, my grandmother would say over the years…

Can you take a picture of me? she asked.

It normally made me smile, then laugh, in wild and warm appreciation. Similar to the feeling felt seeing my Mom with my son over the years, it made me fall deeper in love with my Grandma each and every time…

We need to fall in love more with women falling in love with themselves, regardless of how it feels to you (that may just be about you).

Oma and I did this ‘I look pretty today; can you take a picture of me’ dance for just under 20 years. I got really good at taking photos and feeling, maybe, what it felt like to appreciate ourselves in any given moment. (Speaking of dance, she loved the macarena and never met a chicken dance at my weekend German school she didn’t love. In fact, I always wondered if dancing helped her get over the trials and challenges she had lived through…).

Women are creative, generous, resilient and uniquely energetic creatures.

For so many of us who grew up without a Dad present, whether physically or emotionally, women were our life force, always ready to do whatever it took to help us feel loved, heard, strong, empowered, supported and celebrated.

Our ability to recognize our beauty, inside and out, and want to memorialize it in space and time and, in many ways, honoring the matriarchs who taught us to love all parts of ourselves, regardless of what others feel about it, is superpower-esque.

Since ladies, moms and grandmoms are normally behind the camera and because of many other more powerful reasons, I say take as many selfies and capture as much of you on this day of feeling radiant and ready to take on the world, as possible.

Capture this moment in time where the sun is shining perfectly on your face, those gorgeous eyes, the windows to your soul and two mini wells holding your emotion, want to tell your story…

Honor how much you’ve lived in whatever way you choose and feels good…write without abandon, take and ask for photos unabashedly, travel like there’s no tomorrow, sing as if you had the voice of an angel and you will always have a standing date with your soul…

I see you and think you look beautiful.

Enjoy your business, enjoy your life!

• The Top Four Brand Elements (even though I was an ad girl prior to starting MGI and connected with what was needed to advertise/market/brand and truly connect, I wish I would have known these when I first started out in 2011)

• What Truly Connects in An Authentic Brand Story

• The Six Keys to a Great, Authentic Brand

• What Blueprints Don’t Tell You About What Works, Sells and Engages in Your Branding & Marketing
