We purchased food, sat and simply spoke to people, those who likely have few people sit and talk to them for long periods of time, our plans ultimately becoming irrelevant.
One of my favorite times was bringing Willie in for a warm meal and hearing his stutter become a more fluid speech as his body warmed up (it was colddd in New Orleans the last two nights).
As we waited for his meal to arrive, he drank his sweet tea and told us that his mantra was “It’s nice to be nice”.
He was a love. He was love.
Truly seeing others and giving them a space and time (as long as they need) to warm up and express themselves is one of the biggest gifts to give or be given, of that I’ve been sure!
In the middle of the flight home tonight, a couple to my left offered me a sweet nectarine and it reminded, as many people in my life do, that sweetness is always just to the left or right of us, if/when we just give people the time they need to express themselves and tell their stories so they can more fully be seen and understood…
